HISTORY OF ABA SPORTS CLUB 1926

With the establishment of a European presence in Aba in pursuit of their trade and commerce. Such business empires like GB Olivant, J-Allen, Beewack Kingsway store, and many others, became prominent in Aba.

The managers and top officers of these companies who were all British citizens also grew in population. Their mission being to ensure the growth and population, their mission being to ensure the growth and protection of their investment in this new commercial city of Aba. These British traders and administrators have comfortably settled in Aba. Soon had need for a place of relaxation at the end of the day jobs. At that time, their place of residence was the area of Aba they named European Quarters which is now known as Government Reserved Area (GRA).

These British started by meeting in their individual houses until in 1921 when they formed what they called Aba European club and decided to settled at a place where the club would be situated. The government of the day granted them a large expanse of land, part of which is now occupied by the club. Aba European Club was later incorporated on the 12th day of March 1926 in the same ABA EUROPEAN CLUB and became a legal entity.

Initially, as the name implied, it was exclusively a European Club as no African was allowed entry into the club not to talk of being admitted as a member. This continued until Nigerians who situated in England began to return home to take their places of honor in the society.

It is on record that one SIR LOUIS MBANEFO, a lawyer who later became a Judge of the High Court, was the first African to be admitted into Aba European Club as a member. The second person to be so admitted was DR. FEMI PEARS, a medical doctor then in charge of Aba General Hospital, the third was EPI JOHNSON, the fourth was one OKEMIRI MBA a senior police officer, the fifth was the GENERAL MANGER OF EASTERN NIGERIAN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION and the sixth was SIR ONYENSO NWACHUKWU OFR, who is today the oldest member of the club, despite his age, remains one of the most active and most articulate member of the club.

Records have it that it was this Sir Onyenso Nwachukwu who at the time, was a member and chief whip of the then Eastern House of Assembly, who following the independence status of Nigeria moved a motion for the change of the name from European Club to Aba Club in June 1962. The Sir Onyenso Nwachukwu also became the first person to use the Aba Club's Hall, for his wedding reception on 1st day of December 1962. The headship of the club from inception, was a British affair, until 1970 when the first Nigerian President Mr. Raleke Nwosu was elected. With the growing interest of members of the club in sports, the name was again changed on the 14th day of October 1982 to Aba Sports Club, which remains its name till date. Membership of the Aba Sports Club is open to every prospective applicant whether Nigerian or not, provided such an applicant satisfies the express provisions of the Club's rule regarding admission.

The club is affiliated with several other clubs in Nigeria wherein, by reciprocal membership arrangement, our members are allowed access to facilitates provided by such affiliate clubs on presentation of Aba Sports Club identity card. The administration of the Club is vested in a management committee headed by a President the Club today has three trustees namely CHIEF LEO IKE OKOYE, NZE MARCUALAY ALOZIE NWANKWO, and CHIEF TONY EMERUEM.

The following games and sports are played and enjoyed by members and their guests namely; Tennis, Table Tennis, Squash, Draught, Swimming Dart, Golf, Billiards and Snookers, Gym, Badminton, Monopoly, Jogging, and Bus Stop (Senate) Section were intellectual exercises in the major sporting event. The Aba Sports Club 1926 is where to be, as it is now firmly rooted with Nigerian and other nationals resident in Aba and who are the highest echelon of the society, as her members.
